From flat file to mysql

Is is possible to switch from a flat file installation to mysql? It seems that when I installed AM2 on that account, I didn't turn on the mysql db and now our site is not taking advantage of the best speeds possible.

Can I turn on the switch in the admin settings without losing anything?

Weird AM2 Bug

Hi. I have a category whose index page continuously appears as http://www.widget.com/test/%5Bunknown%20placeholder%20$published.categoryIndex.url$%5D

It's the only category to behave like this. Whenever I put a new category to replace that buggy one, the new category gets the same error bug.

I've checked the chmod, if there were any php or asp code or anything unusual.
The Index file for the category just doesn't get created no matter how often I publish. There are no conflicting rules either.

The only thing I haven't done is check the database, yet.

Hi. I"d like to force pages opened in a specific category to open up as SSL encrypted pages. How do I enable that for one category. I know how to open pages in a secured directory, by adding the password to the directory outside of AM but this is different.

Hi Donna I actually had tried what you suggested and it didn't work. What did work was force a republishing of the category rule every time there was an update, like a new article published.

Hi. After much testing, I've figured out the source of a bug that I couldn't understand before.

Whenever posting an article in two different categories that have different templates, the new article posted will screw up with the template of one of the categories. Republishing the rule fixes everything.

Can you guys help?

Twitter is better as a behind the scene kinda thing. I found that pluging an rss feed annoyed people more. Twitter is not about pluging your site. A good twitter experience should not require any visit to your main site.

I know that sounds odd, but think of i as an extra to people who already follow the regular show.

Blank Dates

Hi. I would like to be able post blank dates.

We're using extra date placeholders - not for the articles but to announce events. There are multiple day events and single day events.

We have two date placeholders

Day 1 and Day 2

But if an event is only one day, we would like to have the default selection to be the blank select option for the second date. So if the user enters nothing no second date appears.

Something that would work like this in the templates:

Studios: $article.eventgdatetwo$

Is is possible to do something like that?

Why don't you ask your provider if he can update. It's not a difficult thing to do. Also my AM2 was installed on perl 4, if I remember well. Never had issues.

Hi Donna. When using category index publishing rules, it only allows one category to be handled by one category index rule.

For example, I could have a category rule for all sports - that contains badminton, swimming, bobsleigh.

I could have a category for music that contains r&B, rock, country.

Let's say I want to use both both sports and music for country music, I can't. They are mutually exclusive. I have to remove country music from music, if I want to use the sports category index template for that sub category. If I don't I will get an error message and won't be able to save the changes to the modified category index publishing rule, until the conflict has been resolved.

So I can't create a publishing rule that applies to category indexes and their print friendly versions.

Hope that makes more sense.

Crawf, if I can be of any help, we have gone through the upgrade of AM1 to AM2 two ears ago and we haven't looked back.

All the concerns that you have will be handled much better by AM2 than AM1. It's also much more useful to us and the ability to do custom programming is second to none. We've automated a lot of common features that we used to have to do manually.

I would say, make the switch and don't look back. We're dealing with several thousands articles at once and have no problems. For one of our installs, the Web host had to remove the server cpu cap he put - as this does not happen frequently, a good host will help you at no charge.

For our common users, using AM2 is actually easier than AM1. Go figure!

Hello. I worry too about the future of AM. I would like to share some of my concerns with the developers before they throw out some of the good things about Am thinking CMSB is the end of everything.

1-Don't abandon the published HTML pages in favour of dynamic pages. If I wanted dynamic pages and id? filenames, I would have used another CMS like Wordpress or Joomla.

2-Having tried CMSB, I hated it and did not find it as intuitive as AM. If you're going to make AM as difficult to use as CMSB and make all the skill and expertise AM users gained through the years useless, it may not be a good thing for your end users.

3-Products such as Instant Realty make a lot of sense, as they are based on code from AM.

4-I don't have a problem with using Perl. I prefer the Perl framework to PHP - if it's not broken, why fix it? I know Perl is not sexy, but it works and deliver the right results.

5-If you add some things from CMSB like Ajax and user enhanced features, hell yeah, go for it. But making AM a clone of CMSB is not the way to keep this customer happy.

I really hope you will reconsider and at least consult with your a varied sample customer base and not just PHP and CMSB fans.

From what you've mentioned above, I see no benefits for me as client having used your products since 2005 and bought several licenses for many clients over the years.

I do want improved capabilities for AM, but not the type you're thinking off.

Currently I have this code - I only display titles and not summary texts.

I don't know how to incorporate this external link code to this so users open a page outside of the site.

Category Image Alternate

Hi. I'd like to use Category images as bullet points for some interface elements like menus and H1. But first, I was wondering how I would code the script to use the default category image if there is no specific category image assigned to a category.

For example:

type of thing.

Single Page Home Page

Hi. I've got the single page installed and know how to make it work for secondary pages like the about. But I don't know to enable it for the index page.

I want to have a main category for the index (home page) and have the other links appear below.

Is it more easier to use a feature page like work around?

Placeholder Bug

Hi. Working on a new install, and comparing it to the set up from an old AM2 install. I've noticed that in the old AM2 install, the is no link to add new placeholders. In fact there are no placeholders at all and this section has always been useless to because of that. Is there an updated file that I am missing to make this section in my old AM2 installation complete?

Different Article Posting Interfaces

Hi. I'd like to have multiple Article posting pages and copies of the DB so that I can customize each section with specific fields that some users don't have access to - the new article posting interface would be used for just writers.

or if not possible

An accordion interface to hid a group of fields that take up a lot of space on a page.

Product management at interactive Tools

Just want to post this so the folks at Interactive Tools understand how they are not helping their customers by releasing new products without proper change management and product management.

IT build its reputation on Article Manager and offshoot products like Listings Managers and Auto Manager. Other spin offs, like News Manager also were build on the same core.

For users, it was easy to "export" knowledge and skills gained in one product and one project to multiple ones.

With CMSBuilder, it all changed and suddenly all of the existing skills are not transferable. While this new product is great for IT, it's leaving an existing amount of customers behind. And when we are constantly encouraged to move to CMSBuilder instead of AM2, one would hope that the transition would be smoother. Currently it is not.

The Docs do not do that and support is spread all over several posts and forum. There are no Move from AM2 to CMSBuilder for dummies document at IT. That is needed.

That's my two cents.

I'm using CMSbuilder after having used AM for years. CMSbuilder makes no sense whatsoever to me and the tutorials just confuse me more. Where does one create the templates that will be used by the program?
