Hi All,

I have a website that uses Listings Manager to publish a gallery of images, with alternate images as the thumbnails. (see http://www.larryjostillustration.com/listman/exec/search.cgi?search=1&perpage=1000&lfield3_match=Main )

Is there a way to accomplish something similar with CMS Builder?

I _think_ we could do it by:

1. use a multiple page "section" that has a record which allows us to upload two images, thumbnail and full size image (note the thumbnail is a cropped portion of the full-size image, not simply a reduced image).
2. use a list viewer that returns results without any "break" between the results, and then constrain the "list" in a table cell with a fixed width

Are there any other (more elegant) ways to do this?

Also, this client uses a Macintosh... I've noticed some inconsistencies in CMS Builder between Firefox on Mac and Windows (mostly with the WYSIWYG editor). We're running Firefox 2.09 on Mac, are there any known bugs in this area?

You can see the current pages (previously updated with Page Publisher) here:
http://www.larryjostillustration.com/index.html

CMSB pages here:
http://www.larryjostillustration.com/index.php
(note that all of the menu items on the Portfolio page currently point to the .html pages rather than .php pages as we aren't ready to make the switch to CMS Builder just yet...)

Thanks for your input!
Eric

Unfortunately the images that end up getting used are the same dimensions as the original that I uploaded. I've double checked to make sure that the published category page is referencing the thumbnail (images have "_thumbnail" added to their name.)

AM2 indicates that it's found GD v2.35, which seems to be working fine for resizing images placed in an article.

Any thoughts on what's up?

Eric

Hey WB,

I was absolutely baffled as well when I first picked up AM2... AM1 was so simple and straightforward it was just plain elegant.

That said, I'm slowly becoming a covert to 2.0. All I can recommend is taking the time to read the tutorials (forget the user guide, it's more conceptual than illustrative and didn't help me much at all). When you get stumped post a question to the forum so we can all learn; everyone at InteractiveTools is great, and if they don't answer very quickly someone on the forum will likely speak up.

Be warned though, creating a site in AM2 does take more time than 1.0, so be sure to add a few extra hours to your estimates for the first site or two. Even though we all keep a copy of the templates we modify to speed the creation of a website, there's still a fair amount of publishing rule tweaks that have to be made that never were required in 1.0. (in AM 2.0's defense, it does give us a lot more creative opportunity than 1.0, which is much appreciated.)

FYI - My first site took me 3 times as long to complete as my last AM1.0 project, mostly because of the learning curve.

Hey All,

Ok - I'm mighty happy (and a wee bit embarassed) to say that I figured out the problem I was having.

The code that Daman and all have suggested works just fine. The problem was that I after I set up my globalIndex.html template, I copied much of the code and used it to speed up the creation of my categoryIndex.html templates. Unfortunately, I didn't notice that the menu include that I copied was $published.globalMenu.webpath$ rather than $published.categoryMenu.webpath$ Because of this little mistake I my category specific menus weren't being displayed, even though the proper include_categoryMenu.shtml file was being published to the respective category folders.

Whew!

Hopefully others will avoid the same mistake I made!

Thanks for the reply Dave.

Things like "publish summary only" could easily be added to the templates and database and simply be hidden (in the DB) so that it doesn't overly-complicate the user interface for folks that don't want it, but still be "one-click" away for those folks who do. I do have a standard set of templates I build 1.0 installations off of, but so much of 2.0 requires changes to publishing rules and db entries that it's just not as simple.

Hi Guys (and Donna!)

I have to say that there are a lot of great things in AM 2 that I'm looking forward to mastering... but in all honesty the new "power" has more than doubled my development time for the simple jobs I used to be able to crank out with Article Manager 1. I find myself needing to do way too many changes to the database structure as well as templates to accomplish the things I used to take advantage such as Article Types, Menu Structures, etc....

Is it possible for you to have an alternate template and database structure already setup that emulates AM 1.4 ?? I have to admit that being a "low cost provider" type of guy who is using Article Manager for small businesses and non-profits I'm hard pressed to justify the amount of time it takes to configure AM2...

I know it'll become "second nature" in the future, but it still seems that we might have sacrificed a bit of the "quick and simple" aspects of AM1 that made it a great tool for price sensitive small businesses in exchange for the robust and incredibley flexible capabilities of AM2... which make it a fantastic starting point for really custom development but consequently drive up development time (and costs).

My perfect mix of features would be:
AM 1.4 plus...
- resizing of images/thumbnailing
- publish to multiple categories

Thanks for all your hard work and understanding.

Eric
