Hello, All -

I need a quick fix to make life a little easier!

My client has an ageing site running CMSB v2.65. The site is very busy and the sheer weight of traffic is causing a large number of errors to build up every day. This morning, for example, the re were almost 1,000. This is causing the MySQL database to fill up with unwanted data to the point where it will no longer accept any new posts. The site "locks up" and I then have to manually flush the error log.

What I would like to do is put a cron script in place that will clear out the error log every couple of hours. I am currently in the process of editing the cron-example.php script but I am not sure what the correct command should be.

Any help would be most welcome.

Hello, All -

I have a client who is giving me some grief regarding email notifications sent by CMSB. I have a simple plugin which generates an email update which is sent out a various times (fired by a CronJob). I receive copies of all the emails and they arrived as expected. My, client, on the other hand, says the messages always go straight into his Junk mail folder. He claims there must be a problem with the emails at my end. He asked his IT guy to take a look and he said...

These messages keep going to the junk folders of the recipients.

I’ve looked into the message properties and I think the reason is that they fail authentication with the server as they pretend to be self-sent….

I have no idea if he's right. Either way, are there any steps I can take to try to address the issue?

CMSB vs WordPress: Post your feedback!

Hello, All -

I must confess that I am at a bit of a crossroads. I've been a massive CMSB supporter for years and have over 20 licenses. I never really rated WordPress. Five, six years ago it was just a convenient tool for bloggers. Now, however, it seems to be coming of age.

At the same time, my clients are starting to ask (specifically) if their new site will be WordPress. I have to politely explain that I can provide something far more bespoke and special (with CMSB). Unfortunately, the question keeps coming back, "Why not Wordpress?" As time goes by, it's getting harder and harder to provide those clients with a suitable answer.

When I first discovered CMSB, on the day it was launched, I knew very little about PHP. Working with the programme has been a joy because it has taught me so much. The downside is that as my knowledge and understanding has improved, so my expectations have increased. When I look back at my CMSB journey there's no doubt I have come a very long way. The trouble is, I'm not sure CMSB is keeping up.

I've had to spend a lot of money - not just on programming but buying in 3rd party tools such as CKFinder. The license for this is very expensive but it gives my users far better flexibility when it comes to uploading and adding media. This is one area - in particular - where CMSB is lagging behind the field.

CMSB is tight and it's robust. It's developed and supported by the nicest bunch of people you could hope to have on your team. The trouble is, I have got to the point where I am spending more time making CMSB do what I want than developing web sites - and that's not good!

With WordPress, however, I'm finding things are different. Instead of working to make things work my focus has started to shift back towards the creative side of my job. It's a lot less stressful! What's more, so long as I am prepared to spend a bit of money, I can achieve pretty much everything I want simply by buying one of the thousands of plugins. Investing in a framework is also money well-spent.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not abandoning CMSB in any way. I have too much time and money invested in it. However, after such a long journey, it is good to do something fresh - which is why my next couple of sites will be WordPress. It isn't perfect for everything - but neither is CMSB. Knowing and understanding the relative strengths and weaknesses of both aps is what allows me to take my business forward.

Is it possible to clear all outgoing mail in a single action? I recently discovered that a client had a backlog of mail on his system (3,000+) but the list is so big that any attempts to remove the messages (via a bulk action) don't work.

I have tried to find an outgoing mail table in the mySQL table but no luck.

I can delete each message individually, using the delete link, but I don't want to do this 3,000 times!

Hello, All -

This concerns a topic which has been archived:

https://www.interactivetools.com/forum/forum-posts.php?postNum=2230012#post2230012

I'm trying to find a way to match the sender's email address with those present in a list of users. Two methods are suggested in the thread:

if (!in_array($incoming_mail['from'], $allEmails) ( continue; } // skip if email doesn't match

$fromMatchesMember = mysql_count('accounts', array('email' => $incoming_mail['from']));

if ($fromMatchesMember) { etc... }

In practice however, neither seems to work. My guess is because the email in $incoming_mail['from'] contains more data than just the email address. The format looks like this:

Joe Bloggs <joe@bloggs.com>

Is this why the match is failing? If so can someone suggest a fix?

Thanks,

Hi, Damon -

Thanks for getting back to me. I've set-up cron jobs on numerous CMSB installations before - but this one just won't work! I've tried every conceivable permutation but cron.php simply will not run.

As I've said previously, I can drop a test script into the same directory as cron.php and that does run from the cronjob. The code looks like this:

* * * * * /usr/bin/php5 /homepages/path/htdocs/cmsb/cron.php
* * * * * /usr/bin/php5 /homepages/path/htdocs/cmsb/cronTest.php

The cronTest.php file runs fine - but there's not a peep from cron.php.

Out of interest, when I run cron manually the web interface suggests I should use this:

php -q /homepages/path/htdocs/cmsb/cron.php

Whereas the Background tasks suggests this:

/usr/bin/php /homepages/path/htdocs/cmsb/cron.php

I've tried these (and plenty of other permutations) and it just doesn't work.

I'm just setting up a new cmsb site (v3.05) and I've noticed that the Background Tasks aren't running. I've set-up a cronjob but for some reason cron.php will not run. (NB: I can run it manually by putting the URL in the browser window.)

What seems odd is I CAN run another script in the same directory as cron.php via the cronjob.

It doesn't make sense. Is there a setting that I need to change?

Note, I have exactly the same type of cron set-up on a different site but with the same server host and that works fine. I've run a comparison between the 2 cron.php files and they are identical.

Ah...!

Sorry Dave (and Damon!). I had hold of the wrong end of the stick. I see what the code does now and where I should add the sort(). I've dropped it in here:

<?php
$tagsToCount = array();
$sectionsToField = array('records' => 'tags');
foreach ($sectionsToField as $sectionName => $fieldName) {
//get section records
$records = mysql_select($sectionName);
foreach ($records as $record) {
//turn field into an array of values
$tags = explode("\t", @ $record[$fieldName]);
// add tags to the count array
foreach ($tags as $tag) {
$tag = trim($tag);
if (!$tag) {
continue;
} // skip empty array values
if (array_key_exists($tag, $tagsToCount)) {
$tagsToCount[$tag]++;
}
else {
$tagsToCount[$tag] = 0;
}
}
}
}
?>

<?php
//extract tags from the array
arsort($tagsToCount);
$tags = array_keys($tagsToCount);
$maximumResults = 20;
$resultCount = 0;
?>

This gives the intended result.

Just one thing; the count is wrong - due to the Postincrement code further up the chain...

$tagsToCount[$tag]++;

This means the count is always one less than the actual number. I thought I might be able to correct this by using a Preincrement - but it doesn't work:

++$tagsToCount[$tag]

Any ideas?

The templates works as expected in all other respects.

What am I doing wrong here?

Simple Email Notification

Hello, All -

I want to create a simple notification plugin that will send an email whenever a record is added to the DB. It would work a little like Djulia's "AlertRecordSaved" plugin which is available to download - except in one important respect.

The records in question are not added to the DB directly via CMSB but by a script. (IPN responses from PayPal).

In this instance I am not entirely sure how I would...

a) Capture the new entry save action

b) Pull the details of the new entry into the plugin

As I say I am looking for a really simple understanding of how to achieve this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks,

Hi, Greg -

Thanks for this. Am I right in thinking, therefore, that the warning sent out by PayPal applies to server setups - as opposed to web site set-ups?

I run almost my sites on 1&1 servers - which are pretty top drawer in Europe - so I am guessing they'd already be on side with the changes.

Hello, All -

For the avoidance of doubt, could the iTools team please give an indication of what changes will need to be made to simpleCart set-ups in order to comply with the soon to be introduced new PayPal requirements?

It is my understanding that the changes will have an effect on the way IPN works - which means some work will be required on our set-ups in order to continue operating.

Thanks,

Help Modifiying Code for Tags

Hello, All -

I've been using some code to create a tag a cloud which works really well:

<?php
$tagsToCount = array();
$sectionsToField = array('records' => 'tags');
foreach ($sectionsToField as $sectionName => $fieldName) {
//get section records
$records = mysql_select($sectionName);
foreach ($records as $record) {
//turn field into an array of values
$tags = explode("\t", @ $record[$fieldName]);
// add tags to the count array
foreach ($tags as $tag) {
$tag = trim($tag);
if (!$tag) {
continue;
} // skip empty array values
if (array_key_exists($tag, $tagsToCount)) {
$tagsToCount[$tag]++;
}
else {
$tagsToCount[$tag] = 0;
}
}
}
}
?>

<?php
//extract tags from the array
$tags = array_keys($tagsToCount);
$maximumResults = 20;
$resultCount = 0;
?>

It works very well. The only thing it doesn't do, however, is order the tags properly. What I would like to do is modify things so that the most commonly used tags appear first in the list.

I have no idea how to do this so could someone please point me in the right direction.
