Hello Dave, I too have a need to offer multiple languages for content. Your suggestions above are helpful - in that I can see that it should be possible - but you don't explain how to actually implement it?

I have just built a site with CMSB and the client now wants to offer the content in 5 languages. So how do I go about implementing option 2 as detailed above?

No it won't work, we had quite a struggle to get it to work properly with phpbb and AM2.

It's a pity Interactivetools have no plans to look into something similar, it is a feature that pretty much every other news system has and it is something readers expect

As GoForum and AM Scripts now seem to be dead and buried is there any prospect of Interactive tools developing a facility for linking news stories to a phpBB forum?

GoForum was just about perfect but since we switched servers it fell over and we just cannot get it to work again.

Hi

that was the first thing I tried. It's a bit bizarre, I created an article just with the word 'test' which published OK, I then went back and input more text (edited the article) which also published OK.

I later went back to re-edit the same article and AM only displayed the original word 'test' in the text field (even though the full article text was visible on the website)

I wondered if it was a caching problem rather than AM? But my other sites that use AM don't have this same problem.

I'll try a couple more things before calling in the big guns.

Hi

I'm just configuring a new installation for a client and I am having trouble with the admin and category settings. Essentially whatever I input does not seem to take effect.

I created all the categories then tried to reorder some but the order keeps defaulting back to the original order.

Same with the admin settings, the details do not take effect right away.

I've found the only way to make it work is change something, do a 'publish all' then change the next thing, do another 'publish all', etc, etc.

Yesterday it took over two hours just to set the correct order for 30 categories. And there aren't even any articles in there yet!

Any ideas? (its a flat file installation)

No, we publish a lot of step-by-step guides for vehicle maintenance. Some have just a few photos others have loads (the record so far is 50)

But it's still frustrating with just 3 or 4 photos as I have to visually check the image before inserting the code. It'd be much easier if the AM2 image references corresponded with the numbered photos: 1, 2, 3, 4, etc rather than appearing at random in the list.

Order of uploaded images

Hi

When I upload a series of photos why don't they appear in the correct order in the 'create article' screen.

See the attached screenshot. I uploaded 14 images in the order I want to use them (they're numbered 1-14) but AM2 just orders them at random in the admin screen which is very frustrating.

The only way to get around this is to upload them one at a time which kind of defeats the object of the multiple-upload facility

Any sugggestions on how to stop this?

I just wanted to add a recommendation for this add-on. We installed the latest version (2.1) that includes category mapping (direct certain articles to specific categories in the forum)

We noticed an instant increse in traffic to our AM2 content. Obviously it's catching users who only ever access our forum and attracts them to our magazine section

Sorry, I maybe didn't explain it too well

I want to create a new category with a selection of sub categories. The 'Latest Headlines' panel shown in this category should ONLY show its sub categories. It should ignore all other headlines from other categories.

PLUS instead of showing the name of the sub-category I want to display an image (company logo)

See attached image (logo should replace category name)

This should operate for this single category only. I know how to make a category-specific logo appear at the top of an article using a templateif tag but I want the logo to appear in the headlines panel in place of the sub-category name.

Does that make more sense?

I'm guessing I'll have to hard-code the html to show the logos each time a new sub-cat is added and use a search query to display the relevant headlines. But it'd be nice if I could make it automatic.

If you just want to start with basic e-commerce facilities and possibly a shopping cart then you could use the free PayPal tools. Login to your PayPal account and select 'Merchant Tools' from the menu at the top of the page.

Your customers don't need a paypal account to use paypal payment systems, they can choose to pay by credit card.

If you want something more complicated then take a look at OS Commerce (www.oscommerce.com) It's free and opensource.

We had the original GoForum 1 and have just installed the GF2. Essentially there is no admin intervention required once the files are uploaded and you've amended your page templates to add the discussion link.

You need to add the location URL of your forum and login details to the config file then upload it to the AM2 directory on your server. Then just add a link to your article page templates. On my pages this says 'Dicuss this article'

That links to the GF2 script which in turn creates a new discussion page on your forum with the title and summary of the article and a URL link to the original article.

Visitors to your site can then post messages in your forum and discuss the contents of the article with other users.

For my site it provides a valuable conduit between the magazine section and the forum as we have a lot of users who only ever seem to use the forum so they miss a lot of the magazine articles. Once an article is published I click the 'discuss this article link' myself to automatically kick off the discussion in our forum.

Mike at AM Scripts is working on an update that maps articles to certain forum topics (ie link the AM2 categories to specific sections or topics in your forum)

I'd suggest waiting for that update.

Unfortunately that didn't work. No matter what I try the include code doesn't get parsed, I've tried telling it to include a text file and an html file but nothing appears.

When I view the resulting forum source code the include code is there bu italicised.

I'm going to have to give up as I'm just guessing.

sorry I've just thought of two other bear-traps with this one.

1. The client wants to keep all previous material visible so if a reader want's to see the list of all articles from a particular category from all issues (both current and archived) how would that be achieved?

I'm guessing we'd have to run a search query to display them? I'm guessing we could use an adaptation of the 'Relevant articles' tutorial to pick out a category name?

2. The client has just thrown this one at me. . .

They would like the latest issue to be contained within a subscriber only section until the following issue is published. (ie the freely available version will be one issue behind on the site, the new issue will be in a password protected area)

Will this mess up the procedure we discussed earlier with moving categories around? Or will I just carry out the same process?

Hello Ross, thanks for the answer.

Just to make sure I get this right.

1. I create an category called ARCHIVE containing sub categories for each archived issue (Jan Feb Mar etc)

2. I create a new issue category with all the relevant sub-categories to contain the latest issue of the publication

3. When the next issue is due I move the current issue category into the archive then create a new issue category.

Is that what you mean?

Is there a way to duplicate a category and all of it's subs rather than manually re-create them each issue?

displaying headlines in a phpBB forum

Hi

I'd like to display the top headlines on the front page of my phpBB forum but I can't get it to work.

I have section on the phpBB index page that I can enter any text or html code via the admin screen. I tried importing the top story page that I use for my AM index but it wouldn't show up

I tried the following code:

does anyone know why this won't work? Will I have to hard code it into the phpBB template?

(sorry php isn't my thing!)

the search.cgi string seems to be running from your artman html folder not a CGI directory. Check that your host allows this.

It may just be a simple path variable that needs changing, I would have expected your search string to look like this:

Can you please confirm which steps in your tutorial I would need to implement to achieve the 'about author' section manually (ie entered manually every time an article is posted)

Currently I upload everything on our site even though the original articles are submitted by a variety of people so I can't use the automatic 'about author' option.

As far as I can see it I just need to add the fields to the article input page and add the placeholders to the template?

Hi

I can confirm that the WYSIWYG feature works perfectly on a Mac. I don't use anything else. But you'll need firefox.

One note, however, is that I've never been able to copy and paste html source code properly. But I don't use straight html very often now.
