Uploading files problem

I have changed all the appropriate settings ( I think! ) and have uploaded about 10 Press Releases, but whhile it seems it's uploading the pdf's - they are not in the cmsAdmin/uploads dir on the server?
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

Does it show them in the uploaded files list? Is there a "Download" link in the upload list and does that work?
If you're not getting an error, I would think they're being saved somewhere. Let me know on the top two questions. I'm sure we can figure it out.

it's all looking fine in the CMS page - it says its all uploaded - the uploaded links appear on the page and seem to be looking in the right place - but the files ain't there.
I can give you a login if it will help?

I found the problem - I forced it to use a 'custom' upload path ( which was the same path I thought it was using anyway!)and it's working ok now.
