How do I get a menu to automatically get created from the sections created in one category?
Is it possible to have sub-categories created?
Is it possible to create a background image and the link text be shown on that?

Let's go over all this one at a time :).
With this menu, are you talking about in the admin section? Like if you had one section for "articles" you want a drop down called "Categories" that actually pulls options from a totally different section? Or do you want a menu on one of your published pages that pulls data from a section in your system?
There are options for both but let me know which one you actually need :).

The menu would be on the user side.

Perfect. If you are setting it up as a Category Menu section, check out the code in this post:

That will go over a couple options. If you were just using a regular multi section, I would need to see an example of your HTML and even then, I might just suggest you switch it to a category menu section.
Let me know :).
