Map of CMSB fields on a web page mock up

Hi all,

Kind of a strange question, but...

A client asked if I could supply them with a mock up of their CMS driven web pages showing where the information from various fields and editors would appear in the various places on their pages.

I have a feeling that there’s no easy way to generate these, but it never hurts to ask.

Thanks,

Jerry Kornbluth

Are they just asking for a standard wireframe gkornbluth, or do they really need to know where each field will appear and what it's called?

I think the issue is that many information fields serve multiple purposes on different pages.

They really want to know which fields end up where, so that they can better understand how to train people to enter their information.

Thanks

Ah. Not wholly unreasonable then. One thing that I found useful was to use a screen capture tool like Camtasia. Then run two instances of FireFox side-by side. One shows the admin screen and the other several tabs with the public output screens.

We now do a series of small movies whenever we launch a new client site. It's saved hours and lots of emails and phone calls. Far better than written instructions since it appears that nobody knows how to read any more.

No real help here I'm afraid.

Good thoughts...

And point well taken. (but don't tell them, please)

Seriously though, is there a way anyone can think of to print out the field name (and editor name) instead of it's contents

Thanks,

Thanks aev for the idea.

I was hoping for a more automated solution to the showing the field name issue, but this would certainly work if necessary.

Hi Jerry,

There's no automated way to do this, but aev's solution should work very well. You might try entering the field names in ALL CAPS and even surround them with $FUNNY_CHARACTERS$ to make it more obvious what's static and what's not. Furthermore, you could also save the HTML from that page, add some style="color: red;" attributes, and load it up again before taking a screenshot.

Best of luck! :D
All the best,
Chris

Thanks Chris,

I'll play with that idea a bit and see what develops.

Best,
