We have a CMSB News site and want to add the a feature that allows visitors to email posts to their friends.

Any suggestions?

Thank you!

My recommendation is to use a third party script such as addthis.com

In addition to emailing to a friend, you can save to all the popular social networking sites and print the current page.

Pick and choose what icons you want to display and even get analytics on who saved to what and printed what page...

Another huge advantage of this service vs a send-to-friend script is that you aren't using your sendmail or php mail to send it. I had this script on a few sites and the spam robots got a hold of it. Next thing I know, I was being contacted by my hosting provider with abuse complaints. IPs were added to Spam Lists and it was hell trying to get it all sorted out.

Use the third party company and you will be far better off!

bastian,

I incorporated an addthis.com button, as kenny describes, on various pages of a client site and see in the stats that people are definitely using the button to bookmark and share the various site pages.

If it is a "detail page" for a specific post, you could provide a link on the page such as:
<a href="mailto:?subject=<?php echo thisPageUrl() ?>">Email this Page</a>. This will launch the site visitor's email client with the page URL entered into the subject line.

I'm not sure how this will work with all email clients, such as AOL, but I think it would work for most visitors.

Re: [Deborah] Email to Friend

Thank you for the response. How do you think Add This compares with Share This http://www.sharethis.com ?

Could both be used at the same time?

Thank you,

Thanks Kenny and Deborah! That's a great solution! :D

Bastian: There seems to be a number of blog posts on the topic of comparing addthis vs sharethis. Please let us know which you decide to go with and why. :)
All the best,
Chris
