hidden fields

Is the special field "hidden" supposed to work by just adding the named checkbox to the editor or does it require code in the viewer? If it requires viewer code like where => 'hidden =1' (like I have been using since it doesnt seem to work without it), what is the "special" part?

Also, I thought in previous versions of CMSB, "Special Fieldname: 'hidden' indicates the record shouldn't be displayed on website." appeared as soon as i named the field but I'm not seeing that message until i close the editor then modify it.
