I know that this is an open feature request but you might want to check out wideimage. It is open source and free to use in commercial products. It can write back to disk or do it on the fly in a viewer.
It has several other useful features as well:
Resize
Crop
Merge (watermark)
Output to browser
Writing a text with a shadow
requires PHP 5.2+ with GD2 extension

Re: [kitsguru] image cropping on upload
Hi Kitsguru,
I'm not a big fan of the idea of mixing CMSB with image manipulation, and prefer using either the free on line editor, Pixlr pixlr.com, or Photoshop, and then involving CMSB after the image is in it's final form, but this is an interesting project.
Glad you came across it.

Re: [gkornbluth] image cropping on upload
We use a 360 tour image that creates an inappropriate thumbnail when uploaded, cropping it on upload for the thumbnails is the only solution in this instance.
Many of my clients are realtors and dont have the, time, skill or inclination to do this step outside of the CMS. The more I can automate for them the better. It would be a set it and forget solution for me.
