Crowd funding of plugin development

Hi All,

Something that I've been thinking about for a while...

Crowd funding of plugin development might be an interesting way to fund projects that are a bit too expensive (or complex) for one of us to implement alone. (like the Facebook plugin being discussed in post http://www.interactivetools.com/forum/forum-posts.php?postNum=2236507) .

I'm sure that the magicians at Interactive Tools have more than enough organizational projects on their plate, so I'd be willing to coordinate and organize this effort through my CMSB Cookbook. http://www.thecmsbcookbook.com

We'd collectively have to decide how the process will work:

  • How ideas are submitted,
  • Project acceptance criteria,
  • How bid specs get developed,
  • How projects get paid for,
  • Who gets to use the finished project,
  • How projects are distributed, etc.

In addition to a project being available to those who initially funded it, I'd personally like to see any projects available to all, for unlimited use, maybe for a nominal fee for each plugin that goes towards funding new projects.

As a first step, how about using this thread to discuss what we feel it would take to get this concept off the ground.

Food for thought.

Hi Jeffncou,

I'm just exploring if crowd funding could generate the funds necessary to hire IT to develop plugins for some of those ideas that are in the back of all of our heads.

in that case I'm all for it! Suggest the facebbok plugin would be a good place to start as a bit of interest has been generated already. Over on the thread you've linked to we've started outlining what we would each like it to do.

There was a system I came across some time ago, built into a support desk / forum.

Each "Member" has a limited number of votes - say 10.  Whenever they came across a wish list item in the forum that they liked, they could vote for it, with 1 or more of their votes.  But voting on one item, means that you have less votes left to vote on another item.  You may have used your votes on something - then a new and better something comes up, so you can remove your votes from items to allow you to vote on others.

This gives value to the votes, rather than just a 'like".

I've always liked the idea of building on this... for instance, having votes purchased in the first place (this could then be used as a build budget), having votes expire after a certain period of time (to increase participation) etc.

Cheers,

Interesting ideas, Tim

Do you remember whose forum it was?

Sorry - no.  I got iTools to build a similar thing for me on another site - but it's not public.

Cheers,
