Thanks for this. I haven't touched the NLB script - so I'm assuming the settings are as you've shown.
Cron.php is currently scheduled to run just once a day! If I change the setting now will NLB pick up where it left off or will it start again?

It will! You want the cron to run once a minute calling our cron.php. It's so you only have to setup a cron once and then CMSB plugins can dispatch cron jobs anytime they want.
