Email link in directory search results

I need to have the email display as a link in my directory listing. Here is the line that show "Email: school@school.edu". I need that email address to be an email link.
Email: <?php echo htmlencode($record['email']) ?>

This will make it a mailto link:
Email: <?php echo '<a href="mailto:'.htmlencode($record['email']).'">'.htmlencode($record['email']).'</a>'; ?>
