Hi Tim, 

It was a user request, and an incremental upgrade (although a lot of work).  We did it mainly just to maintain compatibility with all the TinyMCE plugins and addons that are out there now.  TinyMCE 4 has been out for a few years now and TinyMCE 3 has been discontinued so it has less and less support available for it..
